Cc: Describe your fashion principle?

Ks: Simplicity is the key to elegance; my designs are simple yet elegant with a slight twist to them interesting. I believe in creating outfits that are practical and never run out of style. Finding the right cut is what’s most important in order to compliment every curve and hide the weakness of the wearer.

Cc: Who is your muse?

Ks: Donnatella Versace. She is simply stunning! She definitely knows how to dress a woman just nicely without having to go overboard! Her creations are elegant, glamorous and memorable most importantly. I look to her for inspiration.

Cc: Do you think Malaysian celebrities know how to dress?

Ks: There are certain amounts of celebs who dress well. My personal faves are Fazura, Sazzy Falak and Ning Baizura. They’re trendy and stylish in their own way – Fazura is glamour girl who always looks out for the latest on the rack while Ning is high – end elegance. And Sazzy is boho chic meets rock star hippy! 

Cc: Malaysian artist love to get sponsor. Your view.

Ks: It’s a bit unfair to say that as sponsorship happens all around the world even in Hollywood where it’s more extreme. Hollywood stars get free dresses flown to them during award season and stylists choose a dress for them to wear. If you’re lucky enough you’re outfit will get chosen. So, basically sponsoring is not all bad as it is free publicity for the designer and celebs advantage by not having to worry about buying a new outfit for an upcoming event.

Cc: Best dressed personality (ies) in the world?

Ks: I love, love, love Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham. They took fashion to a whole new level, however we shouldn’t forget those who started a trend and made fashion important from Audrey to Katharine to Elizabeth Taylor and even Grace Jones.

Cc: You do not own a boutique, any expansion plan?

Ks: I do have a plan to start a boutique but certainly not a t the moment especially in these times (of recession) when people rarely shop. Plus my clients rather have me drop over their place than drive into town to get their outfits made.

Cc: Difficulties in becoming a Malaysian designer is………….

Ks: I wouldn’t say difficulties but challenges. Yes, that’s more like it. Having to please everyone, dealing with fussy people, trying to make it big in the industry when you know you’re just as good as the person sitting next to are just some of the challenges that I have to deal with. And just because I don’t dress up Siti Nurhaliza, for example, doesn’t mean I don’t deserve the same recognition as some of my other peers.

Cc: Tell us more about your latest collection?

Ks: I’m going classic black & white with the combination of chiffon, satin and lace. Clean cut dresses with a touch of embellishments to enhance the beauty of each design. This collection is inspired by old Hollywood glam, catered who women who appreciate the elegance of a classic black dress and simplicity in fashion and design. However, what I’m most excited about is the upcoming MiFW Gala showcase in November. A 3-piece showcase in hues of pastel where each outfit is design based on the personality of each of my muses.

Cc: Armani has accused Dolce and Gabbana replicating the bitter quilt silk trouser.Do you think it is ok to replicate other designers?

Ks: Clothes are still clothes. What more can you do with them? Sometimes things happen coincidently while in the process of developing a certain outfit. But having said that, replicating a design is a big “NO”! Taking inspiration from those great legends are acceptable but not copying them exactly! Fashion cannot be invented, it has to be innovated!

Cc: I love Amyza Adenan and Jaclyn Victor for ABP 2008.  Your favourite piece from your creation?

Ks: I have a few of my personal faves but I must say dressing up Dina for this year’s AIM awards is one of my biggest accomplishments. It was my first time dressing a plus size and it turned out great! It got rave reviews by the press from the cutting to the design itself and the fabrication, it suited her well. And it even made people look at Dina differently in a fashionable way.

Ks: Celebrities cum designers have been criticized for lack of creativity in their design but yet they managed to sell every piece? Your view?

Cc: Celebs have the advantage of a famous name and a huge fan base so it’s not a wonder if they’d be able to sell every piece on the rack, their fans either want to dress like them or look like them. They’re (celebrities) used to being dressed up all the time, so what they put out there is somehow a Xerox of outfits they’ve worn before.  Basically, fans are buying a cheaper version of a designer outfit.

Cc: John Galliano or Giorgio Armani? Why

Ks: That’s a tough one! Both are great masters so it’d be unfair for me to pick one. Galliano somehow makes his exaggerated outfits look logical while Armani sells every bit of class. 

Cc: David Beckham or Beck?

Ks: David Beckham all the way! He never fails to look good whether he’s stepping on the red carpet or just in a pair of jeans and t-shirt. He’s not afraid to try a different look maybe it’s because he’s married to fashionable woman but I love his style!

Cc: Your main type of clients?

Ks: Women of the upper class who appreciate and value fashion as well as the quality of good workmanship.

Cc: Worst fashion client?

Ks: Those who want to be fashionable but aren’t certain of their style or what they really want. In the end, they end up being one of those fussy clients nobody care’s to do business with.

Cc: Most of your design seems only for upper class society, any plan to create line for plain pedestrian Jack and Jane out there?

Ks: That’s not true. I do have clients who are from middle class society. The only thing is, I cater made to measure outfits so people may think that my workmanship may end up in thousands when I can actually work around the budget. But of course, be reasonable with the budget and what design you’ve got in mind.

Cc: Some of designers use low, cheap quality fabrics and then sell it for 500% profit margin. Your comments?

Ks: I’m sure there’s a perfectly good explanation for that. Some designers are more about embellishments and design line hence the cheap fabric as it is not the main attraction of the design. However, if an outfit should come up to a certain price it should have a good package consisting of good workmanship, quality fabric and an excellent cut.

Cc: Any plan to sell your creations online?

Ks: Not at the moment. I prefer made to measure outfits as it is one of a kind. The problem with selling outfits online is clients may never know what to expect as it may differ from what’s shown on the web hence they’d feel cheated. But I don’t have anything against those who do have an online business.

Ks: Do you think Malaysia fashion is far behind Thailand and Indonesia?

Cc: Not at all, we all have different taste in clothing and material. We can be just as good as our neighboring countries. Plus, the society that we live in today seem more than willing to experiment with fashion and we’ve come a long way since. They may have the lavish fashion and over the top fabrics but we make up for the simplicity and elegance in style!

Ks: It’s been hard for Malaysia (especially Malay designers)   to jump across the border and end up having a small boutique, your view?

Cc: It takes a lot of work and a huge investment to do so. You need a huge clientele base no only in your own country but across the border to be able to open up a boutique elsewhere. Besides that, make sure you are certain and know who your target market is before to decide to launch a boutique internationally.

Cc: Khairi Sufi in ten years?

Ks: I hope to have a boutique and an established name by then! I want to be known for my quality. I’d definitely like to have a ready to wear line as well as a shoe line sold in local departmental stores if not overseas. If possible, I’d also like to be making clothes for the Royalty of Brunei by then!

Cc: Final question, did you read CuteCarry before?

Ks: I have actually and I think it’s a great blog! Well written, fashionably up to date, informative and keeps you alert with what’s going on not only in the fashion industry but the entertainment buzz as well!

Cc: You’re 38 but looking like 25, any secret?

CT: It’s a genetic thing!

Cc: I saw you almost everywhere in Malaysian fashion scenes; tell us about your daily routine.

CT It’s a normal thing. I wake up at 9 and usually will be at my boutique at 11.00pm. First thing to do is to discuss with my staffs about work and then sometimes I hit the gym. Most of my time I will at my boutique attending clients. During my spare time I like to walk to dog and doing like every else doing!

Cc: Describe your philosophy about the art of fashion?

CT: Fashion should be very personal. The most important thing is we must be very comfortable with what we’re wearing.

Cc: Who is your muse?

CT: don’t have any muse. My clothes is set to reach and inspire.

Cc: Do you think Malaysian celebrities know how to dress?

CT: Most of Malaysian celebrities know how to dress because they know their style.

Cc: Best dressed personality (ies) in the world?

CT: Queen Rania of Jordan, Nicole Kidman and our very own queen, Duli Yang Maha Mulia Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah

Cc: Tell us more about your latest collection?

CT: It’s Raya collection, very wild in colour with creative, lavish beading; unlike my previous collection which is quite mild and simple. In fact next year, most of collection will be full with colour, it’s like a rainbow. As usual, print abstract will be my choice because it is classic and timeless.

Cc: Your next ready to wear?

CT: My next ready to wear that will be launched next year will include cocktail and casual wear but with the same principle, fashion with an edge.

Cc: Your man collection?

CT: I decided to do more suits and also shirt that is focusing on details on certain part, like collar.

Cc: I love Adibah Amin dress in recent Anugerah Bintang Popular. Don’t you think to come out with plus size market?

CT: Calvin Thoo sizes ranges from Sheila Majid to Adibah Noor. It’s for everyone!

Cc: Your favourite piece from your creation?

CT: I don’t have favourite pieces. It will always “my next piece is better than last piece”!

Cc: Celebrities cum designers have been criticized for lack of creativity in their design but yet they managed to sell every piece? Your view?

CT: I do not agree with celebrities cum designers are not creative. They have their own creativity. That is why they manage to sell.

Cc: John Galliano or Giorgio Armani? Why?

CT: Giorgio Armani. Very pure and comfort.

CT: Everyone, from plain Jane to socialites!

Cc: Worst fashion client?

CT: There is no worst clients. Because clients just want to get what they want.

Cc: Among your friends, you’ve been known as humble and down to earth Calvin. In dog eat dog of fashion world, how can you survive with that attitude?

CT: I am just being me. Doing my own thing and always try to produce the best.

Cc: Any plan to sell your creations online?

CT: No. I don’t think so.

Cc: Any plan to multiple your line?

CT: For now, one is enough.

Cc: Do you think Malaysia fashion is far behind Thailand and Indonesia?

CT: Every single country have their own plus and minus. Malaysia is good at one thing while our neighbor is at other part.

Cc: It’s been hard for Malaysia (especially Malay designers) to jump across the border and end up having a small boutique, your view?

It can be done if we keep producing the best. It is important to strive for the best and we can sell our pieces everywhere.

Cc: Calvin Thoo in ten years?

CT: I don’t really know. But what I know is I am going to establish my name in local fashion scene. But if I have an offer to sell my clothes overseas, I do not hesitate to try.

Cc:Final question, did you read CuteCarry?

CT: Yes and honestly it is a good website… and you’re scary because you seems to know everything once it happened. You know what everyone doing!

Cc: Thank you for your time with CuteCarry. I saw you almost everywhere in Malaysian fashion scenes; tell us about your daily routine.

Hd: Daily life as Hatta Dolmat; sometimes is easy, sometimes it is really tiring, busy and free. I can say that my life is really colourful, exciting and full with fun activities (while listen to Kertas song- Penantian) I inspired to answer your question. Hahahaha..

 Morning- I get ready by 10.30, start my day with smile and fun. Sometimes I don’t want to get up from bed because I am too exhausted because of work… but this is what I do for a living!

 Afternoon – I start with something that is related with work. Everything! Whatever work or stuff I did I did it while I am laughing

Evening- still working on my fashion work, Internet. It is compulsory for facebooking, blogging and communicating with friends.

 Night – Usually still with my friends! Just hanging out, talking and laughing!

Cc: Describe your philosophy about the art of fashion?

 Hd: Fashion is something that is so subjective, fashion is an art, fashion is passion, fashion is desire, and fashion is bold! fashion is glam… but fashion for me is life!

 
Cc: Congratulations for winning the Best Dressed (Male Category in Anugerah Bintang Popular 2008 in Genting Highlands). Tell us about the winning creation. 

Hd: Knowing my identity; Hatta Dolmat, I always come out with the idea that is extraordinary. Risk? Criticism? I don’t care about all that because I know what I did has its base and I am still following the correct fashion guide.  It is valid and still within the theme to inject glam and fresh breath to trench ala suit with a details like songket. It is enough to uplift our custom and tradition to international level with a dash of euro street style.

Cc: Why Iz?

Hd: Why Iz? Hahahha definitely because Iz has a heart for fashion. He appreciates fashion. Why should I design for those who don’t know how to appreciate fashion? It is also mainly because Iz love towards fashion. All the elements reflected into Iz charisma and he carries it well!

 
Cc: Do you think Malaysian celebrities know how to dress?

Hd: No! As long as the word ‘sponsor’ is in their soul, they will wear anything. They don’t give attention and don’t realize the importance of fashion. Fashion is also business, if sponsorship is 24hour non-stop, designer will have to pack their stuff and shut down the business!

Cc: Best dressed personalities in the world?

 Hd: Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway and  Angelina Jolie

Cc: You are a runner up in Project Runway but now it seems like you are No 1 in almost everything you do. Do you agree if I said during Project Runway is the biggest platform in your career?

 Hd: Hahahhaah.. I am lying if I don’t want to win in Project Runway. Each of the competition that I am in, I want to win and I will do my best to win!

Yes, Project Runway is the biggest platform for me.  Everywhere I go,  people will whisper and smile and some of them even say hi to me like “Hatta kan? Yang PRM tuh ka?” I just smile and say yes!

Cc: Your favourite creation?

HD: Every piece is my favourite. But I am proud with my diploma collection with theme Scars of Nature.

Cc: You are designing wedding costume. Do you think it is a big market for Malay wedding business?

Hd: Definitely. Wedding is the biggest part in this business. I am also going into expand Hatta Dolmat to bridal line “Hatta Dolmat Couture”.

Cc: John Galliano or Giorgio Armani? Why

 Hd: Both. Galliano is high imagination and beyond the mind of normal human being! Hahaha. Armani for clean cut and elegant!  My idol is Elie Saab and Balenciaga!

Hd: Hahahahah… definitely. Wait for Hatta Dolmat Ready to Wear. Still discussing and I am working toward it.

Hd: Hmmm.. during that time I am 37 year old. hahahhahaha

I am so impressed with multitalented Iz Suliani or better known as Iz. He can sing, write, blog, direct (yes.. he directs video), fairly educated (a degree and a Master from the Land of Down Under) and yes … he dressed like a truly fashionista. His bold approach make him stands up from the rest of the crowd.  Let me think.. erm..I wonder how many male Malaysian singers can dress like he does. Let count.. mmmmmm….. let say not many!

Cc: Congratulations on your winning for the Anugerah Pakaian Lelaki Terbaik in recent Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian 2008. What do you think is the winning factors?

Iz: In my opinion, I reckon it is Hatta Dolmat’s ability & innate talent to translate my personality and transform the traditional ‘Songket’ into a nicely designed outfit that is of international standards. Also, I felt hugely confident wearing it on the red carpet because it speaks volumes of me as an individual and equally importantly, me as an artiste.

Cc:You are now officially Hatta Dolmat fashion muse; do you think you deserved to become a muse?

Iz: I don’t know if I deserve to be Hatta’s male muse or not but I do know how great it felt when a well-known designer like Hatta Dolmat had enough trust & confidence to put me in one of his exclusive creations which I thought is like a pure work of art. I just felt lucky.

Cc:As a muse, who is your fashion muse?

Iz: I do not have a fashion muse.

 Cc: Without any album, you still make waves especially for the urban crowd. Do you agree if I said, your fashion sense makes more waves than your music?

Iz: I am actually the first contestant from One In A Million 2 to release a CD which is a 6-track EP called Gonna Be Alright distributed by Sony BMG Malaysia. The EP acts as an appetizer to the full studio album I am currently working on now [www.iz-one.com]. I am proud to say that even though I am not the winner or the 1^st runner up of the show, I am in fact the 1^st to officially release my music both physically & digitally in the market. This signifies how serious I am in trying to make it in this industry. My music maybe quite low on the Malay side but my debut English single Gonna Be Alright has even reached the top downloaded song on Celcom Xpax as of January 2009 & even reached #2 on FlyFM’s CampurChart, but I am aware that my music is still quite unknown among the Malay crowd. I am going to change this with the full album I am working on at the moment. I do agree that my fashion sense ‘paved the way’ for my music, which I think, is fantastic. You can never separate fashion and music, ever.

Cc: It is like so in fashion to become a celebrity cum fashion designer. Interested to join the troop?

Iz: I do have a love for designing but at the moment, I am too focused on performing, recording and writing my music, and to try getting it out there to the masses. I don’t mind designing as a hobby which I do sometimes.

  Cc: You seem to master the art of red carpet dressing. Any tips on how to dress like a  star?

Iz: Just be yourself but dress sensibly & accordingly. Try to follow the dress code stated in your invite to avoid any fashion mishaps or harsh critics by the fashion police. That works for me at least so I reckon it should work for others too.

Cc: Do you like to shop alone?

Iz: I actually do because I am such a fast shopper. Usually I know what I want and I make very quick decisions when it comes to making up my mind on fashion items, which can be very annoying sometimes for my shopping partner. That is why I prefer to do it alone at my own pace.

 Cc: Who is your shopping companion?

Iz: No one set in stone. I rather shop alone.

 Cc: The most stylish holiday getaway?

Iz: Staying at Milan’s Bvlgari hotel & having Louis Vuitton salespeople come up to my suite. The same happened when I stayed at Le Crillon in Paris.

 Iz: Neither. Haha. I shop elsewhere.

Cc: Bargain Bangkok or Posh Paris?

Iz: Seriously, I don’t mind shopping anywhere whether it is Patpong or the Marais district. Usually I will always be on the lookout for unique pieces no matter where, which I can later put together in order to form a look or theme. It is such a fun creative process that I immensely enjoy.

Iz: My hair is sponsored by Hairkunst (hairkunst.com.my). The owner of the salon, Bambang Soteto (also was a finalist Cleo bachelor list 2009) is my hairstylist…. but I have got this hairstyle for a very long time since 2003 already so Bambang helped me maintain it in Malaysia.

Cc: Any beauty secret?  

Iz: Try to get good quality sleep meaning shutting your eye at least before 2AM. Always remember to wash yourself off any products like hairwax, gels or makeup before you go to bed. Easy! Like my name IZ.

 Cc: Any advised for inspiring young men that just started to be “in fashion”?

Iz: Just be yourself and dress for yourself…. There is nothing more fulfilling than that. Fashion should be fun, not stressful!

Iz: I am a shoe person. I got more than 300 pairs of Y3 Adidas & Puma Starck sneakers. I do buy & collect interesting shoes from Louis Vuitton, Dior Homme, Bally and Balenciaga.

Cc: I heard that you owned a black Hermes Birkin, where you bought it and how long is   the waiting list?

Iz: I actually didn’t buy it. It is actually a birthday gift I got for my 21^st birthday celebration when I was living in Melbourne and I am not quite sure how long the waiting list was. It was bought for me in Hong Kong (I think) & made out of alligator skin.

Iz: I don’t kiss and tell. Haha.

 Cc: Your most precious fashion item?

Iz: This is a hard question to answer. I consider everything I own as precious because to me they are all like works of art I fell in love with which is why I got them in the first place.

 Cc: Any fashion disaster moment?

Iz: I hope I didn’t make any. But really, I only dress for myself. So should everybody else who is reading this now!
